In 2011 the Bulgari family, majority shareholder of the renowned Italian jewellery house established in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, joined forces with the LVMH Group and transferred its majority shareholding in Bulgari SpA. The L3.7bn, all-share deal made the Bulgaris the second largest family shareholder of the LVMH Group. After the acquisition FRANCESCO TRAPANI, great-grandson of the founder, CEO of Bulgari SpA and the driving force behind its success over the past 20 years, was made a member of the LVMH board of directors and appointed President of the LVMH Watch & Jewellery Division. From his position now supervising Bulgari, Chaumet, De Beers, Fred, Dior Watches, Tag Heuer, Zenith and Hublot, he gives LUCY REITER the view from the top of the luxury pyramid.

Hampshire Hotels & Resorts owns hotels in the US, Canada, the UK, India and Thailand, with over 3,000 rooms in Manhattan alone. Its chairman and CEO is the Indian entrepreneur, philanthropist and arts patron SANT SINGH CHATWAL, and his children – Vikram and Vivek Chatwal – both play active roles in the organisation. Sant Singh Chatwal first ventured into hospitality in Ethiopia when he purchased the Lebanese restaurant he had been managing and opened a second one serving Indian cuisine. When a new Marxist government seized his assets in 1975, he moved to Montreal, where he acquired two restaurants and pioneered French-Indian cuisine. His US career began in 1979 with the creation of Bombay Palace restaurant in Manhattan, which grew to 13 international locations by 1986. Soon after, he acquired Hampshire Hotels & Resorts, which he has grown to a $1.5 billion hospitality empire. The company’s sub-brand, Dream Hotels, is a full-service, lifestyle brand for gateway cities and resort destinations, characterised by trend-setting design, innovative and locally popular food and beverage offerings, and ‘relaxed’ luxury service. Its New York ?agship, the 316-room Dream Downtown, opened in a renovated modernist Albert Ledner building between Chelsea and Meatpacking in autumn 2011. In addition, Chatwal plans to develop the Night brand, positioned as an ‘affordably chic’ hotel option, and his newest, extremely high-end brand known simply as The Chatwal.
