I well remember the first time I spent a soul-crushing sum of money on a pair of shoes. It was about 12 years ago and I was having lunch outside on a summer’s day in Soho and winking at me all through lunch on the other side of the road, in a tiny boutique, was a bonkers pair of grass-green shoes, detailed with an emerald in the centre.
